I Don’t Know, What I Don’t Know…….
We all know that one person….the “know it all”. They know everything about everything and no one really likes them because they think they are an expert on everything.
I have no problem admitting when I don’t know something. But if I don’t know the answer, I DO know how to get the answer and that is far more important in my opinion.
For example, if you are looking to host your next conference in Chicago, wouldn’t you like to know ahead of time when the World Naked Bike Ride takes place? Or what about the fact that Miami hosts the largest Graphic Arts convention in the nation. An event like this will drive hotel rates and could deter you from taking yoru conference there. But if you knew about this, you could move your dates by one week and get a great deal. Would your internal client or decision maker want to know when a large religious festival is taking place in Dallas?
These large events may or may not affect YOUR meeting but what if they did? Unless you have a “know it all” on your planning team, you could be walking into a huge challenge because you didn’t know, what you didn’t know.
I will tell you who DOES know it all and I love them for it! Convention and Visitor Bureaus (CVB’s) also known as DMO’s (Destination Marketing Offices). These folks are THE experts on their city. They know EVERYTHING that is going on….the who, what, where, when, how and why! The best part? They will tell you all this valuable information at NO COST.
Knowledge is power they say and working with the CVB of the city you are considering is the best, most accurate way to gain that knowledge. You can still work directly with your hotels of choice, the convention center or conference center venues, but bringing in the CVB can only help you make a better educated decision on that destination.
